Chapter 4 focuses on deviance, crime and social control. The chapter begins with defining social control and deviance. Social control refers to techniques and strategies for preventing deviant human behavior in any society and occurs on all levels of society—families, peer groups, bureaucratic organizations, and governments. Sociologists define deviance as behavior that violates the standards of conduct or expectations of a group or society. Deviance can be understood only within its social context. In most instances, those individuals and groups with the greatest status and power define what is acceptable and what is deviant. The discussion turns to several theories that were developed to try to explain what is considered deviant, who is considered deviant and why. The chapter ends with a discussion of the the criminal justice system including the what makes up the criminal justice, types of crimes, and how crimes statistics are collected.
