This essay will be an analysis of the film “Get Out” by Jordan Peele. You will apply a critical theory called Critical Race Theory to this movie. You will examine how and why this specific lens “works with” and can be used to interpret “Get Out”.
– Please note that you need to be careful how you discuss critical theory. Specifically, you need to understand that a literary work does not display, employ, or use any kind of critical theory unless it is, in and of itself, a scholarly article that discusses critical theory. Instead, a literary work may be analyzed by applying a critical theory to it. Critical theory is something that is used on a literary work to better understand it. In other words, I should not say that a movie uses a critical theory. Rather, I should say that one may use a critical theory by applying it to a reading of a literary work to better understand it.
– I have already created a thesis for this paper, along with a basic discussion paper on applying Critical Race Theory to this movie. I will attach the paper to the instructions, it is named “Exposing Racial Exploitation in Get Out: A Critical Race Theory Analysis”.
– The thesis is in the paper but I will copy and paste it here as well: Using a Critical Race Theory lens, Get Out reveals the exploitation of Black identity and the persistence of systemic racism, particularly through Peele’s use of symbolism and imagery to expose the disturbing lengths white characters will go to control and exploit Black individuals for their own personal gain.
Please keep the following in mind:
– The essay must be in MLA format from beginning to end: header, name block, creative title, double-spacing, indented paragraphs, MLA in-text citations for all quotes and paraphrases, and a Works Cited page.
– Your essay must be an analysis of “Get Out” by Jordan Peele. It is an analysis of the application of a critical theory and an examination of how and why this specific lens “works with” and can be used to interpret your chosen film.
– It would be best if your thesis is the very last sentence in your intro paragraph.
– Your essay must be organized based on the points in your thesis. For example, if your thesis mentions dialogue first and camera angles second, then your first body paragraph must be about dialogue, and your second body paragraph must be about camera angles.
– You must quote from both the movie and the scholarly article you found for the Module 11 Discussion to provide textual evidence for your analysis.
– The essay must be in third-person point-of-view and literary present tense.
– You will need to use textual evidence from the movie and from a secondary scholarly source. I have a scholarly source in part 3 of the “Exposing Racial Exploitation in Get Out: A Critical Race Theory Analysis” paper, but you are free to choose another one, since I think the source I chose needs to be bought in order to access it.
– Be sure to integrate your scholarly source correctly, using proper signal phrases and citations, and use the source only to support your own, original argument and not as inspiration or the foundation for your argument.
– I have included a sample essay given by my professor, but it is NOT analyzing a critical theory, instead it is an analysis of dramatic devices used in a movie. Please keep that in mind as you write the essay, it is just something to help you look at in terms of formatting.
– I have also included a screenshot of what Critical Race Theory is, in case you are unfamiliar with it.
– I have also included screenshots of the rubric.
All of these instructions must be read and followed.
